Customer FAQ's
What kind of Jobs can I post?
We have a broad range of businesses covering everything from Bricklayers to Website Design agencies. If you visit “Post a job” you should find exactly what you're looking for. If your job is not covered please get in touch with us, we are always looking to add new business areas of interest to our customers.
How much will posting a job on Rated cost me?
Posting a job and hiring a business on Rated is completely free! We cover our costs by charging the businesses on our site a small fee, meaning you enjoy all the benefits of using Rated for zero cost.
I live in a rural area, do you list rural businesses as well?
Yes we provide a nationwide service and are working on building up a great network of service providers throughout the whole of New Zealand.
What happens if there’s a problem with the job?
The whole point of our service is to dramatically reduce problems that can come from hiring the wrong service provider, there are multiple reasons why we can achieve this:
1. Our businesses want to build a positive reputation online so they work extra hard to win your positive review on our site.
2. Poor quality businesses are much less likely to sign up for a service which measures and reviews their work.
3. If they do they will be spotted very quickly and you can see who has delivered on their promises from the business’ previous work.
Despite this, if the worst does happen we recommend that you speak with the business directly about how your expectations are not being met. Support what you are saying with written logs of what has been done and what was agreed, along with the relevant areas of the contract, if one was drawn up. Most businesses will want to keep you as a happy customer, especially as they are using our site to try and build up a collection of good reviews. It is always best to allow them the opportunity to correct any mistakes as most of the time they will be happy to do so. If you can’t find a solution we recommend that you seek independent advice, some of the options for this are listed below.
Trade Associations and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs
You could check if the business is a member of a Trade Association, these organisations monitor and hold up standard in the profession and they will most likely have a set process for resolving disputes. In addition the Ministry of Consumer Affairs may be able to offer further advice. They will outline the relevant consumer protection laws and can tell you how to make a complaint about a businesses trading practices.
Independent Mediation and Legal Action
An independent mediator can be a good way of resolving disputes, they take a neutral view of the facts of the case and present their judgements on the situation. This ‘Alternative Dispute Resolution’ can be a much faster and less costly alternative to legal proceedings and their findings can be legally binding if both parties agree. The Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand are New Zealand’s largest and most experienced arbitration and mediation service, providing free initial advice about how the process works.
If these solutions prove ineffective or are not suitable for any reason taking legal advice may be a good idea. This can be a very expensive and lengthy procedure and as such should only be used when all else has failed.
How many businesses can quote on my job?
After you’ve submitted your job, relevant local businesses will start to send you expressions of interest. If you like the look of a service provider you can put them in your shortlist. When posting the job you also have the option to look through business’ profiles and feedback before you invite them to look at the job. You can shortlist a maximum of 5 service providers, whether through expressions of interest or invites. Shortlisting exchanges your contact details, allowing them to provide you with a quote on the work.
How long does posting a job take?
Posting a job takes only a couple of minutes, and once you’ve posted your job emails and SMS messages are instantly sent out to all relevant businesses in your area. You will often start receiving interest on your job within 30 minutes!
How do I decide which businesses to shortlist?
Rated makes it easy to see if you like the look of a business. You can check out any business’ profile which displays lots of information about the company and includes details of if they are insured and if we have verified their company number (it is always advisable to ask yourself to see proof of any licences or qualifications that the business says it has). You will receive an introductory message through the website from the local businesses who are interested in the work, outlining why they think they would be right for the job.
When you are ready you can peruse their feedback. This is made up of a star rating out of 5 and comments from the job poster to let you know how the job went. The feedback comes from all the jobs that have been booked through the site, making it easy to spot a quality business! To make it even easier we give the business an overall star rating summary at the top of their profile which is the average of all the feedback for past jobs they’ve received.
What happens when I shortlist a business for my job?
When you chose to shortlist a service provider or if one of them responds to your invitation they will become ‘shortlisted’ for the job and they will move into the relevant category in the ‘job management’ screen. When shortlisted, contact details between yourself and the business are exchanged and they are allowed to contact you through the online messaging service. The business will most likely give you a call to discuss the full details of the job. This gives them the opportunity to provide a quote over the phone or, depending on the nature of the job, they will arrange a good time for a site inspection so they are able to provide an accurate quote.
How do I decide who to hire?
Now you have received all the quotes you want on your job (remember it is good to get as many as possible up to the 5 maximum so that you can be sure you are getting the best price and have a variety of options) it is time to get down to business and hire your service provider! Price is always a consideration but you should also make sure you look at; what feedback the business has received from our other users, their past experience on similar jobs, if they have insurance, the length of time in the industry and also factors such as if you find they are helpful when answering questions you have or if you get a positive impression when communicating with them.
Are businesses on Rated insured?
You can check if a business on Rated is insured by looking at their profile. It will display a verified badge and details of the insurance if they have it, however it is always a good idea to ask for details of their insurance for yourself before you hire a service provider for a job.

With every expression of interest that is sent to a job poster by you there is a chance to leave a short opening introduction message allowing you to connect with them before they choose their shortlist.

What does ‘shortlisting’ mean?
Customers need to discuss the details of a project with potential service providers to compare pricing and other aspects. This then exchanges contact details between you and the customer and the ‘shortlist fee’ is applied to your account.
